Choosing Healthy Treats for Your Dog
With so many treat options available, knowing what to look for - and what to avoid - can feel complicated. The following guidance will help you make confident choices for your dog.
Read the ingredients list. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, so the first few items are the most important. Look for named meat sources (chicken, beef, salmon) near the top, and be cautious of vague terms like "meat and animal derivatives" without any further clarification. The shorter and more recognisable the list, the better.
Avoid artificial additives. Artificial colours are entirely unnecessary in dog treats - dogs don't care what colour their food is, and some artificial dyes have been linked to behavioural issues and digestive problems. Similarly, artificial preservatives like BHA and BHT are worth avoiding where you can. Natural alternatives like mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) are a much better choice.
Consider your dog's specific needs. A healthy adult dog and a puppy have different nutritional needs. A dog with a chicken allergy needs protein from a different source. A dog on a weight management plan needs lower-calorie treat options. If your dog has any sensitivities or health considerations, always check the ingredients carefully - and ask us if you're unsure.
Watch your portions. Even the healthiest treat can cause problems if overfed. Treats should be a supplement to a balanced diet, not a significant portion of it. As a general rule, treats shouldn't exceed 10% of your dog's daily calorie intake. If you're training intensively and giving lots of treats, adjust your dog's main meal accordingly.
